Hello Grand Prix Artist

 

Thank you for registering for the 5th annual Steveston Grand Prix of Art.  I am happy to report we have surpassed our goal of 100 artists and are expecting to have to cut off pre registration later today.    Weather permitting, we may allow a few more event-day registrations.  The show must go on regardless of the weather conditions however, and all painting location are sheltered or outfitted with a 10 x 10 tent.  Advanced copies of our Event Guide are available in today’s Richmond News. But the maps will be readily available during the race at each painting station.

 

So here is what you Need to Know

 

  • Artist should arrive at Britannia Heritage Shipyards at 10:00 am.  Please present your printed tickets to the registration/check in area when you arrive.  If you would like to paint at the same location as a friend or partner, please arrive at the check-in area as a pair before proceeding to the location lottery table.
  • After you check in please collect your event badges and then proceed to the location lottery table, where you will select your painting location.
  • Locations are done by random draw (If you would like to paint at the same location as a friend or partner, please arrive at the check-in area as a pair, and then tell our event ambassadors at the lottery table you would like to paint together).
  • There will be volunteer drivers again this year to help those who need some assistance in getting to their painting location.  This year the drivers will drop you off at your painting location, and then pick you up at 4 designated spots marked on your map:
    • The parking lot behind Prickly Pear
    • The bus stop by the Tram at Moncton St. and Number 1 Rd.
    • The cul-de-sac on Moncton at Gulf of Georgia Cannery
    • The gravel parking lot at Timothy’s/Pajo’s at Garry Point

 

  • Artists can set up and can plan your painting…. But in your mind only!  Remember, no marks on your painting surface before the Gulf of Georgia whistle sounds at 11 am (you are permitted to bring a primed/coloured canvas).  Keep in mind that work cannot be smaller than 8 x 10 or larger than 18 x 24.
  • You must paint at your assigned painting location, within 10 meters/33 feet of your numbered flag. These locations have been sponsored by local businesses, so please respect that and paint from that spot.  Part of the judging is based on how well you represent the spirit of your assigned location.
  • The 11 o’clock Gulf of Georgia Whistle will mark the beginning of the competition.  Ignore the noon whistle . . . but the 2 o’clock whistle means sign your painting, and then put down your brushes!
  • Return to Britannia by 2:30 (if you used our volunteer drivers, see above for pick-up points)
  • There will be a frame table set up with some materials, but these will be shared so you are better off to bring everything you need to make your artwork ready for hanging.
  • All artwork must be framed and labeled (you will find the artwork labels in your registration package).
  • After you submit your work you can present your lunch voucher at the Bean and Beyond tent for an amazing lunch.
  • Judging will take place between 2:30 and 3:30, with awards presented from 3:30 to 4:00, and the exhibition in the Seine Net Loft will open to the public afterwards!

 

The exhibition will be open Sunday September 21st through to Sunday the 28th  (closed Monday), from 10am – 5pm.  Don’t forget to vote for the People’s Choice Award!  Artwork will be for sale at the prices set by each artist.   The Richmond Artist Guild will be conducting sales for the Grand Prix of Art, with a 20% commission going to support that non-profit organization.   All unsold artwork must be picked up on the 28th.

 

Closing ceremonies will be held at 3pm on Sunday September 28th, where the Photography Awards and the People’s Choice Award will be announced.
