Steveston Event

The Grand Prix of Art, Steveston is Back:  Save the Date September 23, 24th 2017

Set in the picturesque Japanese fishing village of Steveston, and perched at the mouth of the mighty Fraser River, the backdrop for this event is nothing short of stunning. Twenty minutes from downtown Vancouver and a short drive from the US border, Richmond’s event has been the beacon and model for many similar events across the Province and the Pacific Northwest. Nestled between 100-year old Cannery Buildings, Boat-works, and the largest Gillnet fishing feet in North America, this idyllic waterfront community is straight out of the pages of a John Steinbeck novel.

Hosted by Phoenix Art Workshop and Britannia Shipyards National Heritage Site the presents:  Grand Prix of Art, Spetember 23, 24th 2017Artists and photographers of all levels are invited participate.

On race day, registered artists are asked to arrive at Britannia Heritage Shipyards National Historic Site for 9am check-in: here they are assigned a painting location by random draw and dispatched for the start of the competition. The Gulf of Georgia National Historic Site blows it’s shift whistle at 10am exactly, which marks the start of the painting race. This plein air-painting competition has artists racing against the clock, completing their work on location within the 3-hour time limit. The race ends at 1 pm when artists are ask to put down their brushes, return to the shipyards and prepare their paintings for display and adjudication. The art works must be submitted in display-ready condition, titled and priced for sale no later than one hour after completion. These paintings are then available for sale to the public meanwhile; viewers will have their say as well with an opportunity to vote for the “People’s Choice Award”.  The exhibition will remain on display at Britannia Heritage Shipyards National Historic Site until Sunday September 24th. Artists, Volunteers and friends are invited to our award ceremony and culture days celebrations at 4pm – 6pm when you artists can pick up any unsold work, enjoy live musical performance and some live street art.

Artists, volunteers, and our event partners will enjoy a catered lunch while paintings are being judged. Over $2000 in cash awards will be presented to finalists, including several youth and participation awards.  Registered photographers are encouraged to document the entire event, uploading 5 unedited images for our photo essay contest before the stroke of midnight.
