Blue Dirt Girl: Performing at the Artist Picnic from 1pm – 3pm sponsored by Tourism Richmond Kicking off the musical journey is Blue Dirt Girl, a band that has carved a niche for itself with a genre-defying blend of modern soul, reggae, and 70s-inspired guitar magic. Founded by Kathryn Sutherland in 2015, the band’s lineup includes Kathryn on lead vocals and electric guitar, Albert Klassen on bass and harmonies, Tony Lee on drums. Known for their poignant lyrics and heartfelt melodies, Blue Dirt Girl promises a performance that is as introspective as it is infectious. Reflecting on their journey, Kathryn Sutherland shares, “For us, music is a journey of self-discovery and connection. Each recording session has been a milestone, where we’ve explored the depths of our creativity and found new ways to resonate with our audience.”
Crabgrass: Tourism Richmond Main Stage on the Exhibition Field 12pm – 2pm Over at the exhibition field, Crab Grass takes center stage with their enchanting blend of bluegrass, country, folk, Formed organically three years ago, the band members Maurice Bridge on mandolin and vocals, Val Dean on fiddle, Gary MacDonald on bass and vocals, Kerry Richardson on guitar and vocals, and Lewis Silberberg on slide guitar, are seasoned musicians who weave a tapestry of musical diversity. “Our music is like the resilient weed we’re named after—adaptable and ever-growing,” explains Maurice Bridge. “We aim to communicate through our music, bridging genres and generations with melodies that resonate long after the last note fades.”
The Blues Hawks: Tourism Richmond Masters of Musical Fusion Closing out the festivities are The Blues Hawks, whose dynamic fusion of blues styles—from classic 1940s rhythms to contemporary interpretations—promises to keep audiences on their feet. Led by Darren Specht on lead guitar and vocals, Dennis Garvey on stand-up and electric bass with vocals, Sandy McNair on drums and vocals, The Blues Hawks are renowned for their infectious energy and commitment to preserving the essence of blues music. “Live performances are where we thrive,” shares Darren Specht. “It’s about connecting with the audience on a visceral level, whether through the raw intensity of Chicago blues or the laid-back grooves of West Coast styles.”
